Description

The craziest hot hatch of the 80s is making its way to our garage. The Renault 5 (R5) Turbo designed by Bertone, was at the time the most powerful production French car with its 160 hp 1.4 turbo engine mounted in the trunk and its incredibly large wheel arches and air vents. Originally built to replace the aging Alpine A110 and compete with the dominant Lancia Stratos, it enjoyed immediate, albeit limited, success on the European rally scene, culminating in victory at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1981 in the hands of Jean Ragnotti - fun fact Carlos Sainz also rode one!
Unfortunately, it will soon be outclassed by the emergence of Group B and its monstrous machines, notably the 4WD competitors with a clear advantage in dirt on the rear 2WD the R5 Turbo, even with the 350hp evolution of the Maxi Turbo . Proof that cult status can be achieved even without a long list of victories...
